Introduction:

Strings and Bows offers high quality education and cultural experience to its participants. The program is for children who love music and perhaps the violin and whose parents are interested in helping their child in this endeavor. If accepted into the program, expectations are high that you will be diligent in your practice, come to lessons and group classes, attend and perform in recitals and participate in family get togethers. Investment in a decent instrument is a must. The better the violin you provide your child, the happier he or she will be with their playing and the more progress they will make. If you are interested, please contact me at : 919.782.6216, let's set up a meeting.

Biographical:

Hello, I'm Dr. Susan Wallace.  I have fairly recently moved to Raleigh and
have made it my home.  I'm a professional violinist and an experienced
teacher.  I especially enjoy training young artists.  I have spent many
years performing and studying how to work with gifted children.  At the
University of Texas at Austin, where I received my doctorate in violin
performance, I directed the internationally acclaimed UT String Project.  I
taught pedagogy to 20 graduate students and oversaw the teaching of 250
local children.  I'm registered by the Suzuki Association of the Americas
and am president of the NC chapter of the American String Teacher's
Association.  Music is my life, I started violin at a young age, performed
all through Europe and taught many places, in school systems and at
colleges.  I strive to transfer my passion for and skill of the violin and
classical music to my students.

Degrees:

Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the New England Conservatory of
Music I Boston, MA

Master of Music in Violin Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in
Winchester, VA

Teaching Philosophy:

Learning violin is a life enhancing experience.  It develops the mind,
instills focus and discipline, and cultivates a deep appreciation and love
of art.  Years of training are well-rewarded.  Once you have the skill, you
have an universal language at your fingertips - you can travel the world and
instantly interact with and affect others.  You can pass on your knowledge.
It is truly a unique education.  If started at a young age, it literally
expands your brain. SAT scores for students who studied the arts for 4 years
scored 59 points higher on the verbal portion and 44 points higher on the
mathematical portion than students with no art coursework.

Every child is unique.  I strive to discover how they learn and what makes
each one click.  I use their strengths to invigorate them to learn and
develop their weaker points at the same time.

I start children at a young age and teach them in the Suzuki style.  This is
a very nurturing method of teaching about which much literature is written.
The belief that all children have an enormous potential to learn if given
the proper training and education is the core.  Dr. Suzuki's purpose is to
enrich children's lives through intimate contact with music that in turn
nurtures sensitive and beautiful human beings, and provides inner
satisfaction that comes from achieving ability. Parental involvement is at
the core. Parents take notes at lessons and are the teacher's coach at home
with their child. Through this method, the child develops a very sound
foundation: great form, good ears and musical conceptualization. As they
mature, I add traditional materials and ways to help them become a well
rounded, securely trained musician.

All students have a weekly private lesson and a group lesson once a month.
We have two recitals during the year.
